Ray Zimmerman · Crane's Eye View

I have had the happy convergence of clear weather, a new moon, and a good viewing spot for the Perseid Meteor Shower only a few times in this life. I am hoping that tonight will be a repeat of these events. The best viewing is between 2:00 and 4:00 AM.

The StarDate radio show offers information, including some viewing tips. Visit their website for more information: https://stardate.org/podcast/2026-08-12.

Earth and Sky is also a great place to find information about the viewing opportunities for tonight’s event. Visit their website: https://earthsky.org/astronomy-essentials/everything-you-need-to-know-perseid-meteor-shower/.

Here in Chattanooga, the Barnard Astronomical Society will present a viewing party for those who prefer t professional guidance on the spot. The event will take place atop Walden’s Ridge, near the town of Signal Mountain at the historic McCoy Farm. Find more information here.

By the way, Walden’s Ridge was home to two noteworthy nature writers. Emma Bell Miles authored Our Southern Birds and The Spirit of the Mountain. Mary Q Steele authored The Living Year and several children’s and young adult books.

However you decide to enjoy this event, I wish you great viewing.
