I saw something recently asking if, when your kids leave, the quiet feels like freedom or loneliness. It stuck with me because I don’t think I’ll experience it as freedom. I already feel a version of that loss now. So I hold them a little longer. This series came from that feeling.
There was also a shift in the color palette for this series. I added a few Ginny Sims mugs to the studio as little joys. I’ve always loved her loose brushstrokes and the way her colors sit together. The mugs feel like small blocks of color. I kept thinking about that while I painted this series.

Day dates are one of those things you can’t buy but have changed everything for us. Thomas and I have a standing Sunday date—most weeks we get a sitter and either grab a foot massage and dinner, take a long beach walk and hit our favorite taco spot, work out together, or even just get a head start on the week. It’s become a ritual that helps us fight burnout and actually connect. It’s made our relationship better in a real, lasting way.
