Important venue change: we are not at Berry Bar / Justanotherspace this month.
We’ll meet in a rented meeting room at 2-41-9 Kamimeguro, Meguro-ku, about six minutes’ walk from Nakameguro Station. Not far from the usual place. But different.
Our topic is AI Futures: ChatGPT and the Window into the Mind.
Last month we started with Max Bennett’s claim that an LLM is the shiny surface of language, with no inner world behind it. This month we’ll look through the window more closely. When ChatGPT behaves as if it has a world model, a self, or an understanding of other minds, what does that tell us about the architecture underneath?
Our reading is this four-page excerpt from Bennett’s A Brief History of Intelligence: Chapter 23, “The Sixth Breakthrough”. Bennett recaps the five breakthroughs, then asks whether artificial superintelligence will be the sixth.
Read it if you can. If not, still come.
Coffee will be plentiful. We’ll stop at 13:00 and head to Baird’s.
