About a month ago, I made a deliberate choice: to give my engineers agency in what we build. Not because I didn’t trust my own judgment, but because I knew they were hungry to feel ownership over the work. They wanted to have a voice in deciding what was worth building and what wasn’t. They wanted to feel like they were steering the ship, not just rowing it.

I adopted Dash from a PetSmart at the Waterfront in Pittsburgh in 2012. He was a 4-year-old black cat with a white patch on his chest who would yell at anyone who dared pass by his cage. All I’d ever wanted was a black cat who hated other animals, and there he was, perfect. He wanted to be the only pet, the center of attention, the king of his domain.
This year has been a year of a lot of challenges, change, and quite honestly pain. I’m happy to see it come to an end and looking forward to what the future holds. I know I haven’t left all the struggles of this year behind me, but I’m hopeful that 2026 will be a better year.
As a kid I lived with a constant hum of fear. I had the usual worries: the dark, spiders, ghosts, dying, and a few odd ones like balloons. What finally helped me break through was not courage at all; it was reading, learning, and becoming curious.

My team doesn’t really love meetings so I have us only meet once a week for a team sync. During this team sync I like to have the team start out with an ice breaker just to get folks talking and to get to know each other more. I’m brand new to the land of engineering management. In fact I’ve had the full title for less than three months at this point. Though, I’ve lead teams in the absence of managers and have been interim management for nearly a combined year prior to fully accepting the title. It’s definitely hard, but a couple tools help me stay sane in my day to day.
