here are things I saw from the photography community that I liked this week:

this video on the throughlines in Chloe’s campaign photography

My goodness, Lucas sent this to me and I thought it was really cool. Great explanation of the things that are really consistent across their campaigns, and I saw several references that I want to find hard copies of, print out, and put on my own mood boards.

This is such a great example of how to to use an unexpected location, add great styling and talent, and make something supremely cool. More weird locations.

This first photo from Leire Cavia’s recent Vogue Portugal feature

Leire and I haven’t met but this isn’t the first time she’s popped up on one of these ‘work I like’ features. The makeup in particular here is super, super impressive.

Dude, shoutout to photographers out there who are getting the images and showing you what it was like to be there making them. I think it adds such texture and I love seeing creative people use the carousel format in new ways. I tried this once (below) to far less pronounced effect but I like it and it makes me want to try it again.

The film borders & tape on these photos from Lewis Vorn

Not only are the film borders really eye-catching, but I like his use of tape to give texture. Fab photos, too. The more I see stuff like this, the more I want to do it myself.

A used copy of Joe Greer’s first book, the lay of the land

I didn’t know a lot of Joe’s story - some of the challenges he faced growing up, how integral the very early days of Instagram were to his journey as a photographer, and that landscapes are his favorite thing to shoot. I got a used copy on Amazon that was decommissioned from a public library, and I enjoyed it so much I read through it in one sitting. Having met Joe twice (he would almost certainly not remember me) and now getting to learn his story, he strikes me as a wonderful, thoughtful person as well as tremendously talented with a camera.

And now I finally understand how focusing works in a rangefinder camera. Getting the small image to line up with the big image, it’s so genius - I love when you find a gadget from decades past and you see how they used to do it before microchips. The autofocus on my Sony A7IV is wonderful, but for the very first time, I am seriously considering what has to be true for me to buy a used Leica M6. I gotta make some more money.
