Over the years I developed a number of stories in a variety of settings. ‘Apertures of the Void’ brings together some of those ideas. One of them was set in the American frontier during the Anglo - French war of 1754 to 1763. So how do I fit this into a science fiction/horror anthology?

The answer lies in Kanonstats, a Mohawk scout whose story, “To Guard the Pale Fire,” serves as one of the most haunting tales in the Archive.

I’ve just posted some thoughts on the blog exploring the creation of this character. It covers:

  • The linguistic research behind his name (Kanonstats / Ga-Noon-Stats).

  • My personal homage to The Last of the Mohicans.

  • The tragic “isolation of the visionary”—how being the only person to see a monster can become its own kind of prison.
