A little while ago, I sat down with Rob Wiblin for an in-depth conversation about the insane risks from AI, my hopes for corrigibility, and my latest novel, Red Heart. Our discussion is now live on the 80,000 Hours podcast.
Much of the interview revolved around my work at MIRI, including both the worldview expressed in If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies, and my personal research on corrigibility. I think there’s a lot of good content for anyone who is interested in AI, whether you’re just waking up to the onrushing transformation, or whether (like me) you’ve been living and breathing AI for over fifteen years. We also talked about my writing, and the way that fiction can be a powerful educational tool and can serve as a prop for those who don’t want to believe in new technologies. A remarkable amount of the conversation ended up being about whether to expect the future to be squiggles!
