The Plan Nobody Handed You Yet

Right now, across the country, paraprofessionals are walking into classrooms that feel calm. The sensory corner is untouched. Nobody’s tested the sub yet. Every kid is on best-first-week behavior, including the ones whose file tells a very different story once October hits.

If your school handed you a room assignment this week and nothing else, no folder, no fifteen minutes with the teacher of record, no real plan for the specific kids you’re supporting, you are not the only para starting the year that way.

Paras are routinely placed in the highest-behavior-need classrooms with the least formal training and the thinnest handoff from the teacher of record. Not because anyone decided that on purpose. Because nobody built the handoff into the first week, so it never happens on its own.

That’s fixable, and this is the week to fix it, while it’s still calm enough to do it right instead of mid-crisis.

Find your case manager or behavior specialist and ask this, word for word:

“Can I get a copy of this student’s plan with the specific de-escalation steps, not a summary, so I can carry it with me before I need it.”

One sentence. You’re allowed to ask it today.

Write the early warning sign you’re supposed to watch for. Write the first sentence you’re supposed to say. Write the second thing to try if that one doesn’t land. Write the name and extension of the adult you call if it goes further than that. Fold the card. Keep it in your lanyard or your back pocket starting this week, not in November when you finally need it.

You are not supposed to figure this out alone, and in a lot of buildings, you’re currently the only adult who has. Ask the question this week, while the room is still quiet enough that asking feels optional instead of urgent. Ask now and you’re the para who read the plan before the year got hard. Wait, and you’ll be piecing one together from memory while a kid is already mid-crisis in front of you, for a conversation you could have had this week for free.
