Earth Day greetings, fellow Earthlings!
I’m going to keep this short and sweet :) I want to tell you about a couple events I’m doing in the next few weeks (scroll to the bottom for those). But first, behold the EARTH:
I always think about this short film “Overview” on Earth Day. It features astronauts who describe what they call the “Overview Effect” — the shift in consciousness, and unexpected spiritual impact of seeing Earth as a whole, singular entity. As someone who grew up in the 90’s and took for granted that there were photographs of the Earth, it was fascinating for me to realize that before 1969, we had never seen an image of ourselves from the outside. An image that could change how we understand where and what we are in the universe, and what we are to each other. How obvious our interdependency becomes, and how meaningless the borders of nations appear when you zoom out. To see our planet so lucidly, so clearly, against the darkness of space. Would it feel like looking in the mirror for the first time?
This year I’m also realizing that today is the ten-year anniversary of Church of Earth, an art project I started in 2016 which evolved into an experiment in starting a religion...I have a whole lot to say about that but am going to save it for another time. However, I did an interview about this very subject on the Collective Voice podcast last fall for anyone interested.1
For the Locals, here’s some info about in-person events coming up soon! COMPOST CLASS — Saturday, May 2
On Saturday, May 2nd, I’ll be teaching a workshop at the Silt Library about one of my favorite subjects ~ Compost :) !! We’ll be talking about the basics of what compost is, its many benefits, and how to find the right system for your space. Learn how to turn your food scraps into rich soil that you can use to fertilize your garden and house plants, (or at the very least keep them from gassing methane in the landfill). The workshop is from 10am-12pm, free and open to the public.
DANDELION DAY — Saturday, May 9th
The following weekend, on Saturday, May 9, I’ll have a booth at one of the cutest and most wholesome events around, aka ~ * Dandelion Day * ~ in Carbondale! I’ll be selling art, t-shirts, zines, and other handmade goods along with sharing resources to help us all cultivate healthier relationship with death and grief. Look for the “Down to Earth” booth!
Wishing you all a beautiful Earth Day. May we feel our bare feet on the ground, may we marvel at the water and the warmth of the sun and the soft touch of wind on our skin, and send love into this web of life that holds us with so much resilience, creativity, and generosity.
Hope to see you soon ~
- Rachel
I have to say that there’s a moment in the podcast that’s kind of haunting me …. I say something like, “One way or another, everything’s going to be okay” . Though this is what I often choose to believe about our collective future, I honestly have no idea if it’s true, and it feels sort of trite to say when so many things are clearly NOT okay right now.
I think when I said it I was thinking of a more expansive view of time, where we can see that change is the constant and no situation is fixed…balance is an ongoing practice…it gives me hope that even though things feel terrible and overwhelming in this era, we are not stuck in this state forever, there will inevitably be movement and change and regeneration — it is happening as I write this. Anywho, just had to get that off my chest. 💚🙃
