Why is community so hard to find, even when so many people want it?
In this lecture, Andy Patton looks beneath the usual answers—busyness, technology, mobility, awkwardness—and asks what it is about modern life that makes deep belonging feel like paddling upstream. Drawing from Charles Taylor, Lewis Hyde, and years of lived experience in intentional Christian community, he explores the hidden forces that train us to think of ourselves as isolated individuals rather than people made for interdependence.
But this isn’t only a lecture about what has gone wrong. It is also a practical invitation to begin again: to start small, to recover the gift economy, to gather around shared habits and humble needs, and to build “low wall” spaces where a different kind of life can take shape.
