It is amazing what I have stashed away on my computer, things I had (almost) forgotten. These are the first two of several ancient Folk Songs ostensibly collected by a British Colonial Officer. Alas we have no music to accompany them but you are welcome to compose your own. The collection comprises twelve songs and some ethnographic notes which of course reflect a former view on the world. The translations into English and German are of course approximate, the best that can be done in the circumstances for the dialect is complex, the verbal forms often contradictory, the accent often almost incomprehensible and few scholars who went on expeditions to Terroristan lived long enough both to learn some of the language and to write guides to it or useful dictionaries. But we hope they give a flavour of this fascinating people. Hopefully more will follow and help us gain an insight into this quant people and their customs.

FOLK SONGS OF OLD TERRORISTAN (Part 1)

VOLKSLIEDER AUS DEN ALTEN TERRORISTAN

The following are transcribed from the Notebooks of (the late) Col. Rodney Pottinger, formerly of the British Colonial Service and later a serving officer with the 2nd. Unskilled Fusiliers (the ‘Fussy Liars’ as they were known.) He was first interviewed in June 2014. Translations into English and German have been provided, but they cannot of course capture the unique accent of the local dialect.

‘’Ah, how well I remember those wonderful days in old Terroristan, the evenings spent sitting round a burning cottage, roasting our victims. And the songs the natives sang! So moving, so beautiful. Of course in those days as a Colonial Officer based in Putingrad I didn’t really speak their lingo so well, but I made notes at the time with the help of Abdil my trusty interpreter, who had learned his English while serving as a swab boy in one of the tramp steamers that sometimes nosed its way into the Gulf and beyond.

Here are some of them – not the melodies, of course, which I could neither write down nor record in those far-off times, but the content as explained to me and as I wrote them down in my notebook. Such memories they bring back!’‘

So bewegend, so schön.

1. THE SOLDIER’S BALLAD : SOLDATENLIED

‘’Ayee, ayee, yi sith yalieffe, yi sith yadar Linge, yi sith ya beloodi kiddi

ayee, yi bolloe befar, basch-lam,

le’effech mmillchammata sangrasti norata.

Dadu, dattenda, orrellobesim.

O, kzat laBorrum!

(English):

‘’I am so far from my home, from my dear dear wife, from my playful children.

Here I sit in the dust and the mud,

and in the middle of a terrible conflict.

I may never see them again.

Oh, how wonderful!’‘

(Deutsch):

O, Wie wunderbar!’‘

2. THE FISHERMAN : DER FISCHER

‘’Hayamyam hayamyam bodedet!

Dabriker dabriker, danoodle dessand!

Ya filz, ya filz, si spetz, brittit,

ya loogon, depesche, dabooletin.

Da bayamyam dabolöleh enkorker dabriker,

oib iroont, oib iroont,

dagageh zubellen, dagegeh liwuns.

O, dafooiy walaht, walaht, walahti

O dafooiy mazaltin, mazaltin,

Dahoh yeshivante?

O, hayamyam, hayamyam, dekelle into,

waman bestarallto, bastarallto dali,

dafeeker shobenim shawanti tali’‘

(English)

‘’The sea is stormy, the waves dash against the beach.

The rocks are sharp and fierce, the currents deep and so, so treacherous.

There on the brutal sea my husband in his little boat battles the waves,

up and down, up and down, to catch the fishes for us.

How often have I stood here, waiting, waiting, wondering whether he would ever come back?

Oh, let him drown,

so that I can live with my Beloved instead, the father of my seven children!’‘

(Deutsch):
