#220: How Much Is Enough? Matching Biological CCN Supply to Rainfall Demand

The Water phase transitions has been going on for a while, and finally we are the second last episode, the final will be a capstone, synthesis episode to cover everything we talked about

So, picking up the thread from Episode 215 where, we looked at the design principle: we do not need a lot of giant CCN, a small fraction in the right place, can shift the entire droplet spectrum.

Then, Episode 216 handed the us a workbook to calculate what their basin can supply. Both halves sit on opposite sides of a question neither one answered on its own.

Which brings us to the question …

How much supply is enough?

To answer it we have to see that a flux number with no target is a measurement without a setpoint, and every closed-loop system needs both. This episode builds the demand side and sets it next to the supply side so the two can be compared. From there we can begin to design ecosystems to meet a target suited to a bioregion, a climate regime, or a particular urban setting.

The episode as a whole moves through:

  • §1–2: what the cloud is actually asking for, the concentration of giant CCN that shifts collision-coalescence, and why pollen’s number sits high.

  • §3–4: how a surface flux becomes a cloud-base concentration, and why timing matters as much as amount.

  • §6–7: what to do when supply falls short, and a fully worked hypothetical.

  • §8: the closed-loop systems view, and where the lever actually fits, the city.

  • §9: running the whole test on real, public data.
