Josh Babetski · quixado's quixotic thoughts and ramblings

I almost can’t remember a time when I was hired (FT, contract, or fractional) for the same role that matched the original description. Sure, all the core competencies were there – that’s what led to a conversation in the first place. My diverse background and skillset inevitably changed what the “fit” wound up being, and the gig was customized to take advantage of additional ways I could contribute value. To be fair, I’ve also lost things that really just needed a very specific one-trick pony kind of skill set. That’s my lane I guess: Really good at a lot of things (and willing to dive into the unknown), but not a deep, specialized expert in any one thing.

And it’s worked out pretty well.

There are some useful things I’m just not not great at, but I’ve historically found great people whose vision and skillset both complements mine and creates a force multiplier. Be it hiring people at roles, building communities, and recently, trying to find hidden lion bots in order to form a big lion super bot. (Shout out to the people going “I got that reference”).

So, paying forward the process and philosophy which has served me so well and continuing my mission to connect people and opportunities, here are two I’m helping to find a fit for a pre-revenue start-up in an emerging branded entertainment space. Equity and/or contingency deal. Remote is fine. Experienced team. Detailed business plan & financial strategy.

A technical collaborator(s) with a background in developing with game engines and game development workflows and is comfortable with game systems, shader graphs, and procedural logic. Experiences need to be able to run in-browser as well-as in-app. Web (WebGL/GPU) is an export target. Some prototyping has been done in tools like Unity, but the team is open to other stacks if there’s a competitive feature, support, & time to market argument. This is systems-level work, not just hooking up assets.

The person also needs to collaborate, adapt, and figure out novel use cases - but also be a creative and technical voice to keep scope and timelines in check.

A business growth collaborator with experience building and maintaining a deal pipeline. Someone who can help develop materials, pitch, and manage digital strategies, resulting in build win-win partnerships with brands, creators, & entertainment IP owners. There is also in-house experiential products and content properties which can be developed. Definitely great for someone who has the interpersonal and communications skills and the ability to nurture and positively grow relationships.

Even if you’re not either of these, but interested and open to taking your skills and joining a team building something with long-term value, reach out too. If you know someone, make a connection. Like I said earlier, sometimes the job writes itself to match the person.

  • Screen:Dust Bunny” (HBO Max). It’s weird. Like if someone wrote “Roald Dahl meets John Wick” fan fiction. Wildly colorful world, slightly supernatural, and everyone is trying to kill everyone. Mads Mikkelsen is always great. Newcomer Sophie Sloan holds her own. Sigourney Weaver in anything makes it better. It wasn’t until the credits I saw it was written and directed by Bryan Fuller – and then it all made sense. “Dead Like Me” and “Pushing Daisies” were two of my favorite shows, which he also created.

  • Music:Fanfare for the Common Man” (Aaron Copland). Let’s just say I’ll be hearing this a lot during the second half of this year.

  • Purchase: Didn’t really buy anything interesting as I’m still in the repair bay from last month’s accident.
