I quit social media for August

Yesterday morning, I was tired. It was Sunday, which is always a slow day for my wife and I. But I was extra sleepy. I worked till around 12:30, went home to refuel, then went for bowling and hangs for the bachelor party of one of my oldest and closest friends. I was home by 11 and don't drink. But still, I woke up extra tired. For some reason, before even checking my phone, I realized just how…

My simple fitness routine

It's been more than a year since I started getting serious about strength training for the first time in my life (I just turned 38 this month). I've been super happy with my progress, body condition changes, and strength gains. Most importantly, though, I've been happy with my consistency. And I can only attribute my ability to stick with it to my routine's simplicity and flexibility. I do full…

Beans for breakfast

As a plant-based eater, I'm a big fan of beans. In fact, I think one of the best things people, particularly in America, can do for their health is to eat more of them. Up until recently, I've reserved this staple for lunch and dinner. But a week ago I added them to my morning oatmeal and I'm now obsessed with beans for breakfast. My daily breakfast is oatmeal, usually steel cut oats, with a cup…

The paradox of contentment

Contentment is a financial and lifestyle superpower.

I hate Black Friday

I own a retail store, and I hate Black Friday. I hate overconsumption in general, but particularly when it comes to overconsuming poor quality items that will be discarded next month. Its negative effects on our lives and our planet have already been well documented, so I won't do that here. I won't wax poetically about the irony of celebrating a day of thankfulness and gratitude with family and…

Election thoughts

I’m disappointed. Especially with Indiana’s results. But the people have spoken and I won’t deny the results. I expect our air, water, food, and public health to get worse because of the deregulation that’s been promised. But I hope I’m wrong. I’m concerned for women that may be harmed by being denied life saving care during devastating emergencies. But I hope I’m wrong. I’m concerned that prison…

The dystopian modern web

I'm 35 years old and I've been online regularly since middle school. My first email address and instant messenger was Compuserve, followed quickly by the hot new service of that day: AOL. What a time to be online. In addition to filling the family computer with viruses while trying to download music from Limewire, we did something called web surfing, which I suppose was the precursor to modern…

Saying goodbye to our pug Murphie

Late last Monday night / Early Tuesday morning, our pug Murphie passed away. She went on her own in our arms, and my wife and I are completely heartbroken. She was 14 and incredibly healthy her entire life. She was diagnosed with Addison's disease at age 7, but that's not what took her life. This past winter a small mass was discovered on her spleen. They weren't looking for it, but found it by…

Why I'm blogging again

The social web is a nightmare. That's why I'm blogging again.
