• THIS WEEKEND: Despite the inclement weather, Riis Beach HAS officially opened to the public for the summer season! Riis Beach is open from 6 am through 10 pm. Lifeguards are on duty between 10 am and 6 pm → learn more here

Fundraisers & Mutual Aid

• ASAP DEADLINE: Arm the Dollz are iso of various supplies for an trans health care event in May → learn more here

• JUNE 1 DEADLINE: The $50k fundraising goal to keep the doors of the Bureau of General Services—Queer Division, the only queer bookstore in Manhattan, open has been met. Hive Mind Books is keeping fundraiser open until June 1 in hopes of meeting $75k to support BGSQD during the transition and to open the cafe in the Center → learn more here and donate here.

• ONGOING: Black Trans Media published a community call to action and launched a fundraiser to keep the Black Trans Media Space open → see all of the ways to donate here.

• ONGOING: Henry Street Settlement has launched an emergency grocery fund for people who are without SNAP benefits and are aiming to raise at least $25,000 → donate here.

• ONGOING: The Caribbean Equality Project is fundraising to keep its efforts sustainable and to build New York City’s first Caribbean LGBTQ+ Center → donate here.

ABOUT

queer on the street was born out of frustration and a little bit of dyke spite.

At the end of 2020, I found myself frustrated with how local news outlets were covering, if at all, the queer community. I wanted stories about people like me and my friends: the they/them dykes, girly pop lesbians, chaotic bisexuals, nonbinary/GNC and trans people. The creatives, weirdos, outcasts and divas. Stories of queer joy, creativity, love and resilience.

In December 2021, I decided I wasn’t going to wait around for things to change and since I had more than 7 years (at the time) in journalism, social media management and film experience under my belt, I decided I’d just do it myself and launched queer on the street (qots), an online news publication, for all things queer in NYC. I wrote news and culture stories, had an events calendar and so much more. With the exception of several book and TV/film reviews I paid a freelancer to write, I did everything myself and paid for it out of my own pocket.

In 2023, I had to sign a no-compete with my current employer which meant I couldn’t report for other publications, even my own, and painfully had to take qots offline as a result. I wanted to keep the qots name alive and bring the community together through information, but had to find a way to do it without breaking the no-compete. I figured it out in Oct. 2024 and launched NO STRAIGHT PLANS, a free weekly newsletter, for queer things to do in NYC.

The full publication WILL make a comeback. When? I honestly don’t know, but it will. I promise. Until then... I’ll be doing what I can through loopholes. ;---)
