On March 30, Google Quantum AI dropped a 57-page whitepaper, co-authored with researchers from Stanford and the Ethereum Foundation, showing that breaking the elliptic curve cryptography behind Bitcoin and Ethereum needs fewer than 500,000 physical qubits — roughly a 20x reduction from prior estimates. Around 1,200 logical qubits. An attack runtime of about nine minutes, inside Bitcoin’s ten-minute block window. Roughly 6.9 million BTC already sit in addresses with exposed public keys.

The same day, Cain et al. (a Harvard-Caltech team including John Preskill and Dolev Bluvstein) showed Shor's algorithm runs at cryptographically relevant scale with as few as 10,000 reconfigurable atomic qubits — and at 26,000 qubits, cracks a P-256 key in a few days.

Today, President Donald Trump signed two executive orders to strengthen U.S. leadership in quantum com…
