The World Cup ended Sunday, and there’s this weird shift in the air now, as the intensity has completely deflated. The games are over. The celebrations have stopped. Teams have headed home. And everyone who’s been obsessed for weeks is suddenly looking around going “Okay, now what?”

In a weird way, this feels like a familiar pattern.

Job searching has cycles. Sometimes you’re in the thick of it—applying actively, interviewing, networking, completely consumed by the process. The energy is high. Everyone around you is talking about it. It feels urgent and present. And then something shifts. The intensity dies down. The active searching phase ends and you’re waiting, or you’ve accepted a role, or you’ve stepped back to regroup. Suddenly it’s quiet again.

But, at the same time, the end of one tournament is already the beginning of the next. Teams that didn’t go as far as they hoped are already thinking about how to improve. Teams that won are already thinking about how to stay on top. Nobody just stops. They reflect, they adjust, they prepare.

So if you’re in a quiet phase of your job search right now—if the active pushing has slowed down—use this as a reflection moment. What did you learn from the applications you sent? What feedback have you gotten from interviews that’s worth taking seriously? What would you do differently next cycle? What skills do you need to build?

The tournament ended, but soccer continues. Your job search might have quiet moments, but the work continues too. Use this time to get stronger for the next push.
