There is a good reason why I’ve never “tested positive” for anything. That reason is because I never “tested” myself for anything. And do you know what happened as the result of my “no testing?” Absolutely nothing!
In a world obsessed with screenings, alerts and fear, the absence of a test often means the absence of a problem. Many of the issues we confront daily exist primarily because we have been carefully told they exist. Suddenly a condition feels urgent, measurable and in need of intervention.
This is the classic “create the problem and be the solution” system. Identify or create a concern that no one had, generate widespread awareness (and anxiety), then position the remedy. Sometimes the most radical act is declining the test and discovering that nothing, in fact, ever happens.
