Peter Rowland · The Imperfect Naturalist

The Swift Parrot (Lathamus discolor) is a migratory bird that breeds in Tasmania and migrates to mainland south-eastern Australia for the winter. Its range on the mainland includes Victoria, New South Wales, the ACT, Queensland, and South Australia.

The species is listed as critically endangered in both Australia and Victoria. It is suffering from significant habitat loss, particularly the loss of suitable breeding hollows in Tasmania.

I’ve just uploaded a short video to YouTube that shows an individual feeding on lerps.

To accompany the video, a new fact sheet on the Swift Parrot is also now available on my website. It offers detailed information on their identification, nomadic lifestyle, habitat requirements, and their population pressures.

You can read the fact sheet and explore my other Australian animal resources here
