Market/Macro Update

The selling pressure across broad benchmarks has extended into today as the market struggles to find a firm footing amid a wave of late-summer friction. Macro anxiety remains elevated ahead of tomorrow’s Jackson Hole comments, while sticky Treasury yields and persistent Middle East energy risks continue to give institutional buyers pause.

Compounding today’s cautious tone was a reaction to Walmart’s (WMT) earnings report. Despite beating top- and bottom-line expectations and raising full-year guidance, Walmart stock tumbled nearly 9%. Investors looked past the headline beat and zeroed in on a notable deceleration in U.S. comparable store sales (2.6% vs. 3.7% expected) and lower customer transaction growth. Management’s commentary around cautious consumer behavior and price trade-offs spooked broader retail and consumer cyclical names, reinforcing fears that main-street spending is cooling under sticky inflation pressures.

Amid this broad index weakness, semiconductors stand out as a clear pocket of resilience. Driven by persistent tailwinds in AI infrastructure and memory demand, the SOXX has managed to post green returns today even as SPY and QQQ remain under pressure. Institutional capital isn’t fleeing equities entirely—it is aggressively narrowing its focus to high-visibility hardware and tech infrastructure while trimming consumer-facing and rate-sensitive names ahead of the weekend.
