Leanne Shawler · The Môrdreigiau Chronicles

If you’re new to The Môrdreigiau Chronicles, welcome! You might find the Glossary helpful for some of these words. Colons indicate the sea dragon’s thought communications.

Previously, Llallogan’s been trapped in a prophetic dream, controlled by some monstrous godling who has also entranced Queen Heledd and her friends (who I promise will get some agency soon, just as soon as the prompts allow.)

In the distance, Llallogan saw a light. Not pale blue like the godling’s aweful beacon, but a soft golden light, like the dawn he had seen once when he had ventured to the surface.

The light grew steadily, brighter and larger, until in the centre, Llallogan made out the form of a woman.

He’d seen her before.

The Lady Morgaine.

Llallogan breathed a sigh of relief at the sight of his goddess.

She wore flowing white, her long hair a dark aura about her body. At her neck clung a large sea star. From its dark centre, orange flared out along its purple body to its velvety legs. It seemed to Llallogan that it waved hello with one of its legs.

:Poseidon, you should have come to me.: Lady Morgaine’s smile strained at its edges.

Poseidon’s head whipped around. :Would you be happier if I let our son destroy them instead?: he snarled.

The goddess frowned. :Ahdeul? He lives?:

The sea god pulled his hand back from the caer’s shuddering membrane. :He is not … not what he was. Not our beautiful boy any more.:

Morgaine bit her bottom lip. :I thought him lost forever. You hid him from me? You?!: She glanced at Llallogan. :Prophet, it’s time for you to wake up.:

:I can’t. The ….: Llallogan struggled to find the right word for his Lady’s son without offending. :I’m trapped,: he ended lamely.

Morgaine grimaced, looking ready to cry. :You are mine, not his.: She touched the star upon her chest. :Remember this, my beloved prophet. Tell your bards to sing of my sea stars.:

She waved her hand. :Awake!:

Fog closed in about Llallogan. The last thing he saw before all went grey was a tearful goddess throwing herself at the stern sea god.

Did I just drop a clue as to how the second season of Obsidian and Flame might resolve. Umm, possibly, provided that I remember it when it comes time to writing it. No promises.

This is a response to the Smogust Story Hoard writing challenge by Bradley Ramsey and The Circus Dragon for the month of August. And yes, as it often happens with these month long challenges (often being precisely once before), it’s a serial. You can adjust your subscription settings via your profile.
