How to get noticed on Reddit?

Everyone on X and elsewhere keep saying about how they got their first initial users from Reddit. how their post went viral on reddit

But, it’s not as easy as it sounds.

Reddit is notoriously known for their promotional posts being taken down, redittors sharing hate, getting banned from sub-reddits etc.,

But what if I tell you there are some ways that you can get your post reach a much wider audience, get noticed on reddit and also don’t get taken down or banned by Reddit

I have been very active on Reddit since last year and after a couple of bans and recieving my fair share of hate, I have found a couple of ways to get your posts perform on reddit well and also get your first few customers

But let’s understand some basics first!

What is Reddit?

Reddit is a community platform where people from across the world hang out, have discussions around varied topics, ask questions and contribute with their thoughts and experiences

What is a subreddit?

SubRedits are dedicated to a particular topic or interest where people talk about in relation to that topic. Every sub-reddit has its own rules and moderators. So it’s important to know the relevant sub-reddits rules before blankly sharing or promoting posts

Most sub-reddits do not allow to promote but there are various other ways in which you can contribute to the community and also indirectly let people know about your product

Some sub-reddits also have strict policies on the type of content you write.

The underlying principle across all sub-reddits are that as long you provide value with your content which is backed with real-life experiences or data, it should do well and not be taken down.

Different Ways of writing content on Reddit

1. Share your learning- Redditors love to read and contribute to valuable lessons. Think about the various times, you were stuck at something and found a way out. Share the lessons and learnings you got. At the end of the post or in the middle somehwere you can also just plugin your product, sharing how you did and what you did.

2. Write about your success- Success Stories do really well on Reddit. People love to read about success and how you overcame failures and found success. Success stories can be as small or as big as long as you consider it success. For example this founder got his first sale and shared about it.

   

   A lot of people are struggling or gone through this experience. If your story is relatable, its a great way to get eyeballs on your post.

3. Write AMA’s- “Ask me anything posts” also do very well on Reddit. You need to set the context of a certain event that happened, like reaching 1000$MRR or getting your first few customers or selling your company.

   

   So its important to set the context in prior such that people will come over and ask questions. Remember the more upvotes and engagement you get, it is much likely to showcase in sub-reddit as “hot” or “rising” or “top” which will catch more eyeballs

4. Write controversial opinions- Opinions which have a contrary view as compared to the popular view, intrigues interest and redditors are more likely to jump in the conversation to share their own view. For example this post got 178 upvotes with 89 comments.

   

   But writing controversial opinions is a slippery road to take. You may be subject to a lot of contrary views and possible hate from the existing fans around the subject or topic

5. Ask questions- Questions are the simplest way to get redditors to talk and engage on your post. Genuine questions attract quality answers and solutions. Sometimes people even end up d’ming you with some great solutions which you wouldn’t have thought of or sometimes you also end up getting potential leads

6. Write about trending/ hot topics- Writing posts on hot & latest news creates a lot of buzz as there are not much info to read upon and people are looking for some hot takes on trending topics.

But you must be wondering how these posts will help me get customers for my product / service

It’s simple, just plug your website/ service in any of these posts. Make sure it falls easily in the context and doesn’t look like you have plugged in for the sake of it.

Best Time to post

The best time to post on Reddit can vary depending on the subreddit and the target audience you are trying to reach. However, in general, the best times to post on Reddit are typically during the hours when there is the most activity on the site, which tends to be in the late morning or early afternoon, between 9 am and 3 pm EST.

If you are in India, try posting at early morning hours or late evening hours

You can also see the number of people online in your given sub-reddit and get an insight into a best time for posting specifically when you have a good share of members available online.

Concluding Thoughts

Reddit is a great platform to get your ideas validated, ask feedback or get eyeballs to your product or service.

You might get banned or your posts might get taken down for breaking community rules, but as long as you provide value to the redditors, you should do fine.

It is a great channel to get some early adopters for your product specially if you target the right sub-reddit with a valuable post. Also posting on reddit is not a one-time activity. If you want to get the most out reddit, make sure you are regularly interacting on other’s posts as well and engaging in the community.
