The warning signs are piling up, and they all point in the same direction: government power is being used to cage families, intimidate dissent, restrict voting, weaken public services, exploit immigrant fear, and shield the powerful from accountability. From ICE planning detention for children and families on PFAS-contaminated land, to new efforts to block warehouse detention, to attacks on mail-in voting, Social Security, immigrants, online critics, and transparency in the Epstein files, the pattern is clear. This is not democracy serving the people. This is cruelty, secrecy, and authoritarian control dressed up as policy. People power means refusing to look away.
These are not isolated stories. They are connected warnings about cruelty, corruption, extraction, and control. Families are punished, immigrants are caged, public lands are threatened, and wealthy interests profit while ordinary people pay the price. We refuse to look away. Communities are organizing. Advocates are rising. Truth is breaking through. And people across this country are refusing to surrender their rights, their dignity, or their democracy. Power still belongs to the people — and together, we can protect our communities and each other.
Children should never be locked up on toxic land. ICE is planning a facility for children and families at Louisiana’s England Airpark, where Pfas levels in groundwater have reached at least 41 million parts per trillion. That is not immigration policy. It is state cruelty layered on environmental injustice. People power means refusing to cage families, especially on land already poisoned by government neglect. No one should be warehoused like cargo. Representative Rashida Tlaib introduced the Ban Warehouse Detention Act to stop ICE from turning warehouses, tents, and similar structures into new detention sites as mass incarceration plans expand. Republicans are trying to pour even more money into mass detention. Senate Republicans advanced an ICE funding boost after an overnight vote marathon, pushing a budget plan with a $70 billion increase for immigration enforcement while beating back Democratic proposals aimed at lowering costs. People power means rejecting budgets that fund raids and cages while families struggle to afford basic needs. The New York Times
Criticizing the government should not get you unmasked. The Electronic Frontier Foundation sued DHS and ICE for records on administrative subpoenas used to identify online critics and protest participants, even though the demands targeted protected First Amendment activity and often avoided judicial review. Voting rights are under attack. Trump signed an executive order to compile a national voter file and restrict mail-in ballots in a move legal experts say is probably unconstitutional. There is no widespread mail-ballot fraud, but there is a long history of voter suppression. People power means defending the freedom to vote before federal overreach turns into disenfranchisement. Disabled, ill, and aging Americans are being left in the lurch. A March 2026 study based on interviews with more than 50 benefits specialists found longer waits, more denials, and more errors after DOGE-driven disruption at Social Security. Scammers are posing as judges and lawyers are exploiting immigrants terrified by Trump’s crackdown, turning confusion and desperation into profit while real families risk deportation. Cover-ups do not protect survivors. They protect the powerful. One report spotlighted Marjorie Taylor Greene’s allegation that Trump personally told Pam Bondi to block the Epstein files, raising fresh questions about who gets shielded when accountability gets too close.
