there are many angles from which to photograph a pumpjack, but then there is THE angle. you know the one: iconically associated with texas, this sidelong profile features the petrochemical apparatus perched like a praying mantis, sucking the earth like a mosquito. google the word “pumpjack” and 95% of your results will only feature this profile, this silhouette that screams “texas tea.”

let me spill some tea: this image is the antithesis of that. it is a self portrait of a time which just precludes the transformation (and deep disruption) of daily life that was (and is) the covid era……

PSO is pleased to present a text, sound, and image piece by Houston-based artist Lauren Klotzman. I have admired Klotzman’s work for a long time and was blown away by their recent solo show at Ivester Gallery. I especially love the video paintings they make with analog modular synthesizers and the relationships between them and the gouache paintings.

Lauren Klotzman is an interdisciplinary artist who seeks to push the boundaries of what painting is; their studio is a feedback system containing an anti-disciplinary practice driven by many media forms. As a video practitioner, Klotzman is an instrumentalist, operating an analog modular video synthesizer to create “video paintings” via electricity. In all media, Klotzman is interested in how time and energy – as intertwined forces – compose not only the acts of art making, but existence and consciousness. Based primarily in Texas, they are a recent MFA graduate from Yale Painting. Current research topics include historical computing, New Materialism, perception, consciousness, non-human intelligence, and “nostalgia of the future.” They have exhibited internationally, and their writings have been published by Hyperallergic and Glasstire, among others.

I recently overhauled the PSO site at the behest of longtime PSO supporter Sean Justice to bring back the full screen image experience. Now, when you visit the site, your page will be full screen, the controls will fade, and you have the option to view the site in dark or light mode!

PSO RADIO has returned as a new full screen experience. Listen to a stream of selected PSO pieces from the past with each accompanying image filling your browser. The controls fade after three seconds and you are left with a portable and evolving net art piece. Great for laid-back listening (in the best sense of the term) or meditative immersion!
