Michael Madsen appeared in over 300 movies and shows that included hits like Reservoir Dogs, Donnie Brasco, Kill Bill, and Sin City. But there’s one credit on his filmography most people probably haven’t heard of. In 2005, Madsen starred in ESPN’s poker drama Tilt…and turned in one of his best performances.
Set against the backdrop of the fictional World Championship of Poker, Tilt followed a group of poker players and law enforcement agents focused on bringing down Madsen’s Don “The Matador” Everest, a ruthless, charismatic, poker player and criminal. And while any number of actors probably would’ve done just fine in the role, only Madsen would’ve been such a natural fit for it. His signature gravelly voice, brooding looks, and unpredictable temper turned Everest from a run-of-the-mill bad guy to an unforgettable villain.
After playing characters like Vic Vega and Dominick “Sonny Black” Napolitano, Madsen was a no-brainer pick for the role. He embodied and personified “The Matador” from his first appearance on screen, appearing always in control and ready to finish off anyone who got in his way. Madsen brought a much-needed gravitas to the show that lent it credibility and authenticity while making the tone dark and compelling.
