Why "I Don't Have Time" Is the Perfect Lie That Protects You

Your ‘House of Human’ is resting. Your body feels loose and your breathing is slow. The corners of your mouth curl upwards as you smell the scent of bergamot in your hot Earl Grey tea. The late afternoon light spills across the room to a soundtrack of birds singing. Your sofa feels impossibly comfortable. Then, the door opens, and your ‘Super Soul Self’ is in the House! And your SSS always brings gifts… But they can only enter when you pause in the present moment for long enough. Because when you’re ruminating about yesterday... worrying about tomorrow... or racing from one task to another... the door stays firmly shut.

What if “I don’t have time” isn’t a scheduling problem at all?

What if it’s a subconscious identity protecting itself?

You want to change your life.

You’ve finally admitted to yourself that you’ve been playing out the same loop for years (if not decades): Different scenery, different lighting, different players… same story.

But every time an opportunity shows up that has the potential to help you choose a new story, you hit play on the same thought:

“I don’t have time.”

You lean into it and list all your commitments, all your responsibilities, all your beliefs...

You argue for your limitations like they’re on trial and you have to defend them.

You feel the urgency in your body, and while you haven’t run a mile, you feel like you’ve run two, because your lungs seem to have shrivelled like grapes in the baking sun and your heart has joined a carnival drumming troupe. You feel the urge to keep going because you believe if you don’t everything will collapse, and it’s up to you to hold it all together.

(Spoilers: it’s not all up to you.)

While you’re busy defending your schedule...

Your subconscious is busy defending your identity.

And when your Super Soul Self notices an opportunity, your subconscious sees a threat and says, “Oh hell no!”, because change threatens the status quo and the status quo is needed for you to feel safe.

Your subconscious has one primary job:

Keep the blueprint intact.

Because the blueprint has kept you alive this long. It doesn’t know you’re trying to build a bigger life. It only knows that changing the blueprint once felt dangerous.

So, your subconscious steps in to protect you.

“I don’t have time.”

It’s safe not to have time, because if there’s no time you don’t have time to work on change.

What you don’t realise is that when your nervous system activates you actually get dumber!

(I’m not being mean here, nor am I trying to insult you, it’s just true. Here’s the science bit: blood flow shifts away from the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for logic, planning, and nuance, and goes to the amygdala and brainstem for survival.)

So when your nervous system activates (yeah yeah you call it stress, I’m calling it what it is!), your perception narrows to the point where you are only looking out for threats. You literally cannot think clearly.

Curiosity disappears, creativity disappears, possibility disappears.

Opportunities don’t disappear, but your ability to recognise them does.

Urgency becomes urgent and everything becomes a priority.

(And we both know that’s not clear thinking, right?)

You don’t know it at the time, but if you were to stop for a moment and ground yourself in the present moment... you could see the opportunity.

(Sent by your Super Soul Self to help you make the change you desire.)

You don’t know at the time that if you were to make the time to take that opportunity you’d be able to get to the root cause of the limitations you’re so used to arguing for and (if you were open to it) they would dissolve.

And when they dissolve you stop using all the energy you’re using on being activated, and from worrying, and overriding yourself, and telling lies about time, and you’d have all that energy to motivate you and you could actually create the life you desire…

And what you believe is possible for you lives in your subconscious blueprint:

Your subconscious blueprint is the result of you making sense of the world during childhood.

Your identity, who you think you are, is the result of your subconscious blueprint.

Your emotional state is the daily expression of that identity.

Your behaviours and habits are just your state seeking expression or regulation.

Your actions and decisions are a result of your behaviours and habits.

Your life is a result of these actions and decisions.

And the emotions generated by your life loop back around to prove your identity right.

It’s a pattern that keeps repeating.

Most people try to change their lives from taking different actions, and forcing habits, and trying to change their behaviour. It’s like repainting your walls to cover the cracks. It looks good for a while, but eventually the cracks show through, and this time they’re bigger.

It costs energy and effort, and doesn’t touch the subconscious blueprint that’s trying to pull you back and keep you safe by any means necessary.

Staying overwhelmed feels safer than becoming someone new.

(*shakes fist at subconscious)

If you keep telling yourself “I don’t have time”, you’ll keep proving yourself right by filling your time. And, worst of all, you’re programming scarcity…

Your subconscious doesn’t distinguish between scarcity of time, money, love or safety. It just learns one rule: There isn’t enough.

Keep telling yourself that, and you’ll see how little you find you have!

Your subconscious doesn’t care what you don’t have enough of, it just starts to feel safe not having enough of it.

Scarcity just becomes familiar. Not enough time, not enough money, not enough energy, not enough safety.

And what’s familiar becomes your blueprint…

And you already know how that pans out.

With one caveat - you have to be prepared to experience some discomfort...

(We can do it bit by bit though because small steps are safe steps.)

Rewiring happens across three overlapping phases: Nervous system recalibration, emotional wisdom, and identity alchemy. Using tools over talking, and experience over explanation, we rewrite the blueprint from the inside out.

You already know your identity is your blueprint, and your life will follow that blueprint. And if you want to, you can change it.

“I don’t have time.”

Really, though?

Show me your screentime - I’ll wait.

And maybe ask yourself: What becomes available to me when I stop telling myself I don't have time?

The woodsman is in a rush, he has wood to chop, wood to sell, and wood to deliver. He rushes into the forest picking up his axe. He’s been so busy chopping, selling and delivering that he hasn’t had time to sharpen his axe. He chops and chops with a blunt blade. It’s exhausting. He’s too tired to think straight (there’s no time), so he keeps chopping. He’s too tired to realise that if he just stopped for a moment… and if he just sharpened his axe… that the return on his investment to pause and to clear what’s holding him back would be far greater than he ever imagined…
