On this edition of The Rundown, I actually get to talk about what I think is good news for a change!

Last week, Congress failed to renew Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), allowing one of the government’s most important foreign intelligence authorities to lapse. Section 702 permits the NSA and FBI to collect communications of foreign nationals overseas without obtaining individual warrants. Although Americans cannot legally be targeted, their communications can be collected incidentally when they communicate with those foreign targets, making the law controversial among civil liberties advocates.
