Is Xi Jinping pumped for the metaverse?
There is a lot of hype out there about the technology, but have we really thought how cyberspace’s new frontier will look in China — the Sinoverse? In my latest Nikkei article, I posit Beijing will limit Ready Player Go-style immersive gaming worlds and focus on integrating the physical and digital worlds. The emphasis on augmented reality over the purely virtual is an extension of the Marxist historical materialism that underpins the socialist state's development.
