Like Icarus I fly across the world and “meet” a new friend in Australia. Brother Lawrence also explores mythic stories and his faith. I visit with creatives over zoom and build a community outside of geography. I access the knowledge of centuries from a phone in my pocket. I transcend space and time. It is a blessing but only when linked with the smallness of my life. I watch the squirrel outside gather leaves for her nest. She puts them in her mouth and runs along the tree limb. Then disappears at the top of the neighboring pine. She works all day this way, enhancing her home, looking for seeds. Her daily rhythm. I too have rhythms of laundry and dishes and groceries and editing and journaling and poetry. I’m happiest when playing on a human scale – moving in a tempo my great grandparents would recognize. Still, I love the new miracles of science and technology. Even if I don’t understand Ilia Delio and her reassurance that AI will help us in our journey toward Teilhard’s Omega Point. These contraries churn in me. I want to be the hermit silently weeding my garden. I want to be the preacher conquering algorithms and engaging the world. What a strange time of opposites. I breath into them and know that a third mystery beyond my comprehension rises like a seed in the ground.
