Today’s reading time is 5 minutes. - Miko Santos (August 17,2026 )
US podcast advertising hit $2.862 billion in 2025, up 17.6 per cent year on year, per the IAB/PwC Internet Advertising Revenue Report (commissioned by the IAB, the ad industry's own trade body, conducted by PwC). Growth is real but slower than prior peaks, so a rate card written in 2023 is probably pricing itself above where the market actually sits now.
Podwires Rundown: The EU AI Act’s Article 50 transparency rules became enforceable on 2 August 2026, and any podcast using AI-generated narration or synthetic audio segments now sits under a live legal disclosure requirement, not a future one.
Source: European Commission, Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-generated Content (EU regulator, no commercial interest).
Key Points
Tool providers must embed machine-readable watermarks in synthetic audio; whoever publishes it must disclose that clearly to listeners.
Disclosure must reach listeners “at the latest at the time of first exposure,” not buried only in written show notes.
Penalties for non-compliance run up to €15 million or 3 per cent of global annual turnover, whichever is larger.
Tools already on the market before 2 August get until 2 December 2026 to retrofit watermarking.
Platform policy is already split: Audible’s ACX mostly still blocks AI narration, while Findaway Voices, Apple Books and Google Play Books require disclosure instead of an outright ban.
Why It Matters
For producers with any EU listeners, this stopped being a future question on 2 August. An AI-generated intro sting, synthetic-voice ad read, or machine-translated segment now falls under the rule, and the obligation sits with whoever publishes it. “I’m not based in the EU” isn’t obviously a shield once the audience is there.
With no single standard yet, the safer default is to disclose. Add a one-line AI disclosure to your show notes and a five-second spoken note on any episode using AI narration today, ahead of a rule with real fines attached.
Disney+ and Hulu start streaming iHeartMedia podcasts. Hey Jonas! landed on Disney+ 14 August, Pod Meets World (55 million-plus downloads) follows 24 August, four more iHeart shows hit Hulu by year-end, terms undisclosed. For producers: a platform deal alone doesn’t prove reach until buyers agree what counts as podcast versus streaming-video audience. (ppc.land, 16 August 2026)
Spotify crosses 300 million premium subscribers. Q2 2026 brought its highest-ever gross margin, on the first earnings call under the new co-CEO structure. For producers: a stronger balance sheet backs Spotify’s video-podcast payout programs, worth watching for expanded creator monetisation. (Spotify, 4 August 2026)
Cumulus Media cuts senior podcast staff. Its VP of Marketing and Podcasting and VP of Podcast Operations roles went in a restructuring tied to the company’s Chapter 11 exit; Cumulus says the network is still “in full force.” For producers: even an established radio-backed network is trimming podcast payroll post-bankruptcy. (Inside Radio, 6 August 2026)
Video listening overtakes audio-only for the first time. Edison Research’s Podcast Consumer 2026 study found 57 per cent of consumers now both watch and listen, YouTube now the top weekly platform at 37 per cent (up from 31 two years ago), ahead of Spotify. For producers: even a static-image YouTube upload now reaches viewers an RSS feed alone can’t. (Edison Research/SSRS via Inside Radio, June 2026)
Add the one-line AI disclosure now, before anyone asks. With Article 50 already enforceable, the cheapest compliance move going is also low-effort enough to finish today. Any episode using AI narration, translated audio, or synthetic segments gets a spoken disclosure early on plus a show-notes line reading "Narration produced with AI text-to-speech." Z.Tools (7 May 2026) calls this "operationally manageable rather than burdensome," and distributors including Findaway Voices, Apple Books and Google Play Books already require disclosure rather than banning AI content outright, so disclosing shows keep broader platform access. This week, check your last five episodes for any AI segment and retrofit the show notes before your next upload.

Pod Meets World (iHeartPodcasts). Rider Strong, Danielle Fishel and Will Friedle turned a rewatch of their own 1990s sitcom Boy Meets World into a podcast in June 2022, a pitch Strong had been sitting on since 2018.
The format never reinvented itself, alternating weekly rewatch episodes with cast interviews, and it passed 50 million downloads by the end of 2025. This month it's the show Disney+ picked first for its new podcast slate (see today's Quick Hits).
The real lesson sits before the acquisition, in a format sustainable for years and a built-in fan base that did outreach no ad budget could buy. One thing worth borrowing at a smaller scale is picking a single piece of shared history your own audience cares about, and building a recurring segment on it rather than a one-off.
