Shreya Sharma · Podcast Marketing Magic

Hi! Welcome to a special edition of Podcast Marketing Magic.

Candidly, I wasn’t planning on writing today since it’s my birthday and we here at Tink are BIG believers in taking time off to celebrate.

HOWEVER, it’s also Tink’s birthday on July 19! We’re turning SEVEN!

Aaand we’re doing something special– we’re asking for help. (If there are any Cancer Suns amongst you, you know that’s not easy for us).

As you might know, Tink is hosting the International Women’s Podcast Awards this year in Toronto. It’s a special event that shines a light on a surprisingly overlooked creative group – women and femmes all over the world. But we need your help!

It costs money to make an event magical! And fundraising has been hard.

Despite all the Ted Lasso quotes, Schitt’s Creek memes, and Bear GIFs that are flying around in our Slack, there’s been a sense of ‘hey, why are we so alone in supporting the work that women are doing?’.

So, we’re just a company standing in front of their audience, asking them to consider supporting us.

✨ If Tink or Podcast Marketing Magic or Podcast the Newsletter has ever helped you make a connection, learn something new, have a laugh, or enrich your life as a person in this industry in any way, consider throwing a dollar or two to our Buy Me a Coffee.

Help Us Uplift Women Podcasters

This money goes into:

  • Paying those involved in putting together the event

  • Funding a scholarship program for those that can’t afford to submit

  • Helping prove to the women and femmes entering these awards that people care about celebrating underrepresented work

It’s taken a lot of guts to ask for help but, we’re doing it as we do everything – with hope in our hearts and sparkle in our eyes! (Not a Julia Roberts-level sparkle though because nothing sparkles like her).

Thanks for considering!

P.S. – A reminder that the submissions to the awards are open until July 31! More info here.

On to some crucial lessons I learnt on a Substack Live earlier this week.

Earlier in the week, I went live with Paul Caiola, co-host of That Aged Well and a year-long Tink client! You might remember That Aged Well from our previous edition on how an independent podcast doubled their downloads in just one year.

Here’s the entire live if you have 39 minutes to learn about being funny on mic, the importance of nurturing community, and how to make a podcast with your friend without tearing their head off. Warning: this video contains references to Dirty Dancing, Shreya singing Rocky Horror Picture Show badly, and Paul being a sweetheart.

Here are my top takeaways from this live:

  • If you’ve got a podcast with your friend and you’re trying to be funny, here’s the cheat code — make your friend laugh.

  • Don’t forget to do your comedy warm-ups. This could be singing in the shower and shaking it all loose, just getting in the zone.

  • If you’re creating a podcast with your friend, as soon as the mic comes on all you can do is trust your partner.

  • Remember that consistent effort is more important than consistent results. Take a breath and be yourself. It pays off.

  • Making a show is only part of the work; welcoming people into your community is the other part. If you take the time to respond to people, you’ll reap the benefits of it.

  • Script your episodes. Period.

Remember to listen to Paul and my chat to learn more.

That’s all for this week, folks. We’ll be back with a full edition of Podcast Marketing Magic next week!

Until then, stay hydrated and hopeful.

💜 Shreya
