The holiday season is just about here, and a lot of you might get together with friends and family. If you have a podcast, you must really like to get people talking! What about recording stories of the people you gather with for holiday events? You don’t need a plan of how you might use it for your podcast specifically. Just go ahead and press record. You can record gatherings with lots of activity and conversation around you and then sit down with one person at a time for more personal storytelling without any distractions. Here’s a few ideas.
Ask friends or family to talk about their experiences and perspectives on your life.
You could watch a movie about disability together and interview people about how the movie and the portrayals landed with them.
What about setting a recorder or a camera down and just seeing what happens? You could kick off a conversation or let things flow how they flow.
Bring a laptop and microphone or a smartphone, whatever you have. It’s okay if the recording quality isn’t perfect. You might be surprised by what you capture on the spot. Maybe you can re-record sections later or record some narration for any audio or video that’s not great. But capturing it in the moment when it happens can’t be beat.
Remember: It’s fine if you go in with a plan and the people you record don’t follow that plan. We bet there’s something in there that will make an exciting episode. Sometimes it’s better if things don’t go exactly how you thought it might. You could learn something new and share those new perspectives on your podcast.
For example, we know a podcaster who interviewed his parents about how they felt when he acquired a disability. They couldn’t do it! They kept talking about him because it was for his podcast, even though he told them he wanted their perspectives. It’s hard to prepare a question and the people you talk to dance around it and don’t really want to answer. But it was fine. He made a compelling episode out of it because it was what they wanted to share at that time. Think ahead about how you might handle it if people want to tell a story different from what you asked for. How will you flow with it? Whoever you’re interviewing, let them be themselves.
