We’re running it back to one of the greatest comic book conventions on the planet, HEROES CON. This weekend, Friday through Sunday, come track me down in the legendary Artist Alley at table 686! Of course, Ryan Best will be with me, so be sure to bring some comics by to get signed. I’ll have all of the new material like HEAVY #1 and the wraparound edition of RISE #1 up for grabs, but make sure to come by fast! In Denver, all of the wraparound covers sold out by Saturday morning.
Ryan’s pre-show commission list is open, but filling up fast! Get in touch with him to claim one for yourself. Outside of that, there’ll be plenty of pre-drawn original art up for grabs as well. He’ll also have a few HEAVY sketch covers that you can get him to draw on, too!
A bit strange, I know. Most of us get into the hobby of reading comics through the cape & cowl stories—the exploits of American Gods reminding us what we can be. Most certainly, I admit that being my case. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not one of those pretentious types who suddenly decided that they’re just “too smart” for superhero material. But when it came time to put together a new series after THE HELIX PROJECT and MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT, I needed to continue the trend of creating from a personal place—one that would keep me excited to get out of bed. The superhero genre just wasn’t an environment that I felt I could add to. I didn’t have the legacy of century old characters, nor the desire to just do my very own Superman.
I knew the next story would concern itself with the male ego, though. I just didn’t get how we’d approach it. At one point, I thought I’d pen another psychological crime-esque thriller, apropos of REFLECTIONS AND OTHER LITTLE DEVILS. Something didn’t feel right. Lo and behold, I end up in a dive bar with my would-be collaborator, Ryan Best, whisky coursing through my veins, and I knew. I knew that this was an autopsy of what it meant to be a good man. What better way to do it than through a super-man?
We’re just a few weeks away from the launch of RISE #5! The penultimate chapter of the series really brings our story to a boil as Jon’s looming guilt slowly cannibalizes his sense of self. The pre-launch is currently up, and since we hit 100 followers on it, I’ve come to reveal a brand new cover! Here’s RISE issue five, cover B:

We’re most of the way through fulfillment of HEAVY #1! At this stage, most of what’s left are folks who ordered signed copies (which took a while to get to Ryan and back to me) and/or original art. Once I return home, I’ll put the finishing touches on the campaign, and we’ll finally be able to put this one to bed!
