Political commentators in the United States have become useless, irrelevant, even laughably ill-suited to their subject. For in 2026, lying outside the professional ken of political scientists, political historians, broadcast and newspaper political analysts—the entire mass of traditional observers of America’s politics, economy, foreign affairs—is the utterly unhinged power that be.
Canada’s minister responsible for trade with the United States said on Thursday that a pledge from a Trump administration official to not challenge Canadian laws around French language and Canadian culture could provide an opening to renew negotiations.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said on Wednesday that laws and regulations to make it easier to find French content on streaming services had been “highlighted” by the American side, but he said that they were not a make-or-break issue.
However, later on Thursday, Mr. Trump may have undone any good will by signing an executive order to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America.”
Beats the hell out of this political historian, as it does any commentator lacking a medical degree and many, many years of clinical experience in the field of psychiatric disorders of the severest kind.
