In my 30s I dated a Korean-American woman in her early 20s who, post-relationship, developed full-blown schizophrenia. I had witnessed some emerging symptoms yet never grasped their collective identity and its coming severities — namely, delusional beliefs, disorganized thinking, bizarre, erratic behavior. Worse, she refused treatment.
And yet my then-20-something Korean-American ladyfriend of unremedied derangement — marked, nonetheless, by flashes of lucidity — would have been a more suitable candidate in Wisconsin’s gubernatorial contest than the altogether flaky, 37-year-old Korean-American woman whom Democrats appear hellbent on nominating tomorrow.
As well, Francesca Hong’s supporters have quite simply lost their minds in a hallucinatory rampage that even my sadly afflicted, once-upon-a-time partner never sustained.
One might say their degree of impairment is virtually unquantifiable were it not for a late-July Marquette Law School survey in which the quasi-police-defunding, quasi-prison-abolishing, quasi-Thanksgiving-disdaining democratic socialist led the “no-nonsense, disciplined“ Milwaukee County Executive, David Crowley, by 31 points. (The latter’s upside: 34% of respondents were undecided.)
She accomplished this mind-blowing feat while spending nothing — I kid you not: $0 — on TV ads. She didn’t need to. WisPolitics reported last week that a group “linked” (you know, like a mob associate) to the Republican Governors Association dumped about $1 million into pro-Hong television. And a mid-July NYT piece reported that “a super PAC tied to Republicans is spending $2.2 million on television advertisements that appear to be aimed at boosting” Hong’s chances.
Some political observers denounce the forked-tongue tactic, but it’s smart politics — and bipartisan. Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill spent big in her 2012 reelection campaign promoting Republican primary candidate Todd Akin, the unbridled imbecile of “legitimate rape” and its “really rare” pregnancies. (It worked. Candidate Todd became nominee Todd. And in red Missouri, Claire happily went on to crush him.)
After all, pondered the senator, if those folks of the opposing party are foolish enough to even consider supporting a-good-rape-is-a-terrible-thing-to-waste barbarian, why should she deny them? And supply meeting potential demand was exactly what Republican operatives pondered as some folks were favorably weighing the merits of a zany font of faculty lounge exotica, as David Axelrod summed up Wisconsin’s leading Dem candidate for governor.
The Bulwark’s Lauren Egan takes a look at the thundering, rational angst now plaguing other voters:
This Tuesday’s gubernatorial primary in Wisconsin may seem like the latest chapter of an internecine fight among Democrats over the philosophical direction of the party. And it is that.
But there’s much more on the line…. There are real fears in Democratic circles that Wisconsin Democratic voters aren’t quite appreciating [the] stakes as they head to the polls.
Egan observes that chief among the sundry panic is a question. Will the next governor see that the swing state’s 2028 presidential election’s actual outcome and, accordingly, its proper 10 Electoral Votes are honestly certified?
Let’s just say the question is anything but a headscratcher. Please proceed, Ms. Egan:
[Tom] Tiffany, a House Republican who is cruising to the nomination, has a lengthy history of embracing Trump’s election lies. He voted to overturn the results of the 2020 election, peddled lies that “hundreds of thousands of illegal votes” were cast in Wisconsin, and signed on to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s lawsuit seeking to bar Wisconsin and other swing states from voting in the Electoral College…. He’s continued to back an FBI probe into Wisconsin’s 2020 election workers. He remains unwilling to definitively state that Trump lost the 2020 race.
For any Wisconsin Democrat to imagine that Tom Tiffany will somehow metamorphose into an upstanding, guileless good guy and thereby do the right and proper thing in November 2028 — or, for that matter, in any preceding month — the Dem must first harbor a mental condition utterly saturated with delusional beliefs.
If not immediately treated by even the mildest dose of sound reasoning mixed with simple logic, this horrific affliction might well culminate in behavior just bizarre and erratic enough to compel a pro-Francesca Hong vote.
People, there is time. Save yourselves. Us, too.
