Wow, I’m such a nerd.

The digital Bunsen burner is fired up, and binary reactions are bubbling up in the flask (well…ok, my local SSD). I’m trying to rebuild my site in both Kirby CMS and Zola, to determine which will serve as its new backend. That’s right: I’m giving my site a proverbial butt lift; probably for much cheaper than the real life ones, but I digress. Honestly, it’s going to be close — both have merits and things I like. This will likely come down to how confident I feel dealing with PHP, and any potential breaking changes in Kirby or dependency updates. As a non-developer, it’s something I have to consider.
Those who follow or have communicated with me are familiar with my “disdain” (probably too harsh a term) for SSGs in the past. So why, you ask, is one in the running again? Zola strikes a nice balance between built-in features, while remaining simple and free of massive dependency chains through being a single binary. And just last night I reached a breakthrough getting my plan for related posts to work in Zola. Kirby offers this functionality out of the box, but I’m a stubborn ass.
PIKA is a wonderful platform and has so much going for it. Cue the proverbial “it’s not you, it’s me” meme I suppose, but absolutely true in this case. (Disclaimer: when this line was used against me by ex-girlfriends, my feelings were somewhat…different.) For people who just want to write and publish, PIKA provides that in spades — and then some. The team behind it have been bringing much improved features and functionality, and they have my utmost respect. This comes down to my wanting more freedom and control over the templates and backend code. Stubborn ass, remember?
For those of you who partake of my particular brand of sometimes inane eccentricities, brain farts, and mental meandering, and are potentially confused to see a post show up in your feeds again, thank you and surprise. I’m still here, and I’m going to be showing up more again — hopefully not to your chagrin. As a Canadian I profusely apologize in advance, of course. ;)
