The 3 sisters is an ancient growing technique developed by indigenous groups in North and Central America. The 3 sisters name was coined by the Haudenosaunee in the northeastern part of North America. The sisters are corn, beans, and squash. The 3 make up a circular growing system; the corn being the oldest and tallest sister, creating trellises for the beans to climb on. The beans being the middle sister, taking nitrogen from the air and putting it into the soil providing feeding the other plants. And lastly the squash, the youngest sister, whose leaves spread wide protecting the crops from weeds and keeping the soil moist.

Their circularity doesn’t end in the field! These 3 crops are absolutely delicious together and also provide diverse nutritional benefits. This salad is an ode to their ancient connection and a recognition that sometimes simple things are the best things!
