Photography Prompt: Bellissimo

Each of us has a different idea of what we find beautiful.

True beauty is not just as they say, skin deep, but rather something that has the potential to captivate us at every sensory level.

The photography prompt this week is: Bellissimo
(as in the Italian word for beautiful)

One suggestion for image selection this week is to reflect for a few moments about what beauty means for you. As you are scanning through the archives to find a photo, be mindful of how your own images make you feel.

Does one in particular take your breath away? Give you a warm memory or feeling?

Is there a specific subject that you seem to photograph more often than others that you may not have noticed before?

The cover image above represents a few of those for me.

I am drawn to creating photos of the sun and moon looming larger than life in the sky. The memory of the day I made this image was one of those “bellisimo” moments. I was riding high on the joy of discovery of a new place that had been on my travel bucket list, as well as enjoying time spent with family who I had not seen in a while. All of these positive vibes come through for me when I reconnect to this photo.

The photo prompt last week sparked a lively debate about what makes a good abstract photo. Should the subject be completely unknown? Or is it a matter of presenting something familiar in an unfamiliar way?

A few photos from the week had me scratching my head and saying “WHOA” on more than one occasion. Pedro Lourenço shared an image of a coffee stain on a folding train table that I could swear was an illustration from an esteemed ornithological journal.

Like projecting our psyche into an ink blot, the power of pareidolia is strong in the abstract. I found myself seeing faces and figures in the flowing forms of these images.
