Philip P. Stemler · The Parent Empowerment Newsletter

It is hard to believe, but today is the one-year anniversary of the Parent Empowerment Newsletter! I can remember researching and writing my first piece, a discussion on California’s Ethnic Studies mandate, holed up in our converted third bedroom/office during winter break while the rest of my family was sick with a bad cold.

From this beginning, we have accomplished so much. Here are my Top 3 highlights:

  1. Exposed Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) Trustee Ashley Anderson’s 2022 hit and run and NMUSD’s dubious Public Records Act responses to inquiries regarding the incident.

We scooped local media outlets such as the LA Times/Daily Pilot and OC Register, who belatedly covered the incident. Additionally, our reporting led to the creation of a new media outlet: the launch of Stu News Costa Mesa, which covers Costa Mesa! These were our most-viewed posts of the year.

Trustee Anderson’s seat is up for election in 2026. Thanks to our efforts, the voters will have the opportunity to decide the impact of these revelations.

  2. Shined a light on California’s Ethnic Studies curriculum mandate, leading to my participation in a statewide forum!

  3. Called out anti-parent school board candidates and supported winning candidate and pro-Parent Empowerment NMUSD Trustee Andrea McElroy.

Along the way, we surpassed 1,000 subscribers and continue to grow. I am continually humbled and amazed with the impact we have had. Let’s Go!!!

Here are the stories I anticipate following this coming year:

Leave a comment with further suggestions!

Additionally, I plan to continue experimenting with audio/video content to bring you interviews and commentary on the issues that matter. Stay tuned!

For my followers, I also have plans to use the Notes feature more aggressively to share quick updates inbetween posts.

Finally, I decided to implement a paid subscriber option so that you can directly support this Newsletter!

You come here for thoroughly researched, independent news and analysis on local and statewide issues impacting our schools and communities. This work takes time and diligence. By financially supporting this Newsletter, you directly contribute to these efforts. You will ensure this Newsletter remains a voice for Parent Empowerment and join our cause!

Thank you for reading, thank you for sharing with a friend, and thank you for supporting Parent Empowerment! When you see a prompt to become a paid subscriber, please consider doing so.

2026 promises to be a great year, and I am excited to continue this adventure with you all.
