I can’t remember whether I have ever written an acrostic before, let alone when I last did so. Nevertheless, that was what popped into my head when I decided I should try to respond to Cassondra Windwalker’s latest prompt on the Story Unlikely writers’ forum.

So here is what emerged from that inspiration. It’s on the bleak side, I suppose, but so would be being stuck in a labyrinth, I imagine. Whenever I’ve visited one, I always knew I was going to get out.

LABYRINTH

Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published

Long may your futile strivings vainly thrash
Around the borders of your private cell.
Beyond this granite tomb, blind cymbals clash;
Your deafened ears shall close their eyes as well.
Resist the pealing, as all balance fails
In dismal darkness, stretch out, feel the walls
Now here, now there, now faced with slimy scales,
There is no refuge, lantern light ne’er falls
Herein- the cavern that your mind enthrals.
