The New Space Race Is a Numbers Game

It’s been a busy week in the skies.

I don’t mean the eclipse - which I more or less missed in Northumbria, thanks to clouds and being a little too far north to enjoy the spectacle - but a little closer to earth.

This post is about the new space race - not to the Moon or Mars, but to control the communications networks rapidly filling the skies above us. I wanted to write about why Russia’s attempt to catch up with the US and China tells us a great deal about who is winning, who is falling behind - and why it matters.

On Wednesday, another Space X Falcon 9 lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California carrying another 24 more Starlink satellites. That took the number of Starlinks in orbit past 11,000 - pretty amazing given the first first operational satellites were launched only seven years ago.
