A Field of Possibility

As this stretch of spring weather continues to unfold, I find myself returning to one of my favourite seasonal rituals—tulip season.

There is something quietly thrilling about those first rows of colour opening across local fields. It feels like a gentle invitation to slow down, step outside, and gather beauty in its most fleeting form.

Over the past few years, I’ve had the pleasure of discovering some truly gorgeous pick-your-own tulip farms close to home. Places like TASC in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Sarah Grey in Pelham, and Murphy’s Farm in Alliston Ontario have become part of my spring rhythm. Each visit feels a little different, shaped by the light, the bloom timing, and of course, the stems you’re drawn to.

What makes these visits especially meaningful is the experience itself. There’s usually a tour fee, and tucked into that is the simple pleasure of building your own bouquet—often ten stems, each one chosen with intention. And if you’re anything like me, narrowing it down is the hardest part.

I’m always drawn to the more unusual varieties—the novelty doubles, the ruffled frills, the ones that feel almost peony-like in their fullness. They bring a softness and movement that elevates even the simplest arrangement.

One of my favourite combinations this time of year pairs those lush, layered tulips with delicate branches of lilac and spirea. There’s a natural looseness to it—nothing overly structured, just an interplay of texture and tone that feels very much in step with the season.

If you’re looking to refresh your creative practice or simply bring something special into your home, I can’t recommend a visit to a tulip farm enough. It’s not just about the flowers—it’s about the experience of choosing, gathering, and arranging with the season as your guide.
