Since our beginning, Peak Cinema has sought to be a voice for the film community in Boulder. Our mission has always been to inspire local filmmaking by highlighting local filmmaking. Today, we are thrilled to announce that this mission is taking a massive step forward.

To help translate our digital community into a physical space, we are partnering with the Boulder County Film Commission to launch a brand new, monthly film showcase right here in our own backyard.

Meet The Local Lens.

Graciously hosted by the Boulder Marriott, this new series is a monthly celebration of the filmmakers, storytellers, and creative professionals across Boulder County and the Front Range.

We, Aaryaman Patel and Clayton Hester, will be officially hosting, programming, and leading the live Q&A sessions for each event.

More than just a film screening, The Local Lens is designed to bring together directors, crew members, photographers, digital creators, business leaders, and community supporters who are actively shaping our region’s growing creative economy. Each event will feature screenings of locally produced films, conversations with the artists behind the work, networking opportunities, interactive demonstrations, and light refreshments.

Whether you are an industry veteran, an aspiring creator, a student, or simply someone who appreciates great storytelling, you will discover the people and projects making our creative community unique.

As Boulder prepares to welcome the Sundance Film Festival and bring the world to our backyard, The Local Lens will serve as the center of gravity for our own filmmaking ecosystem. It is designed to be a place to highlight everything that Front Range filmmakers have to offer, creating a consistent space for local talent to network, collaborate, and support each other’s work.

To anchor our very first showcase on September 9, we are actively looking for local short films that center around the theme of "New Beginnings."

The Local Lens Film Submission

Documentary filmmaking is arguably the most vital genre in independent cinema right now, and this week, the Front Range becomes its epicenter.

From August 11 through August 16, the 7th annual Mimesis Documentary Festival takes over the Dairy Arts Center in Boulder. Mimesis carries with it an experimental spirit. Unlike traditional festivals that lean heavily on industry networking and commercial distribution, Mimesis is fiercely artist-focused and community-oriented. Past festivals have featured expanded cinema with installation art and live performance.

With eighty percent of its programming selected from an open submission process, this independent festival highlights personal, underrepresented, and culturally specific stories. The result is a meticulously curated lineup of traditional, experimental, and ethnographic nonfiction that pushes the boundaries of how we experience reality on screen.

• 🗓️ When: Tuesday, August 11 to Sunday, August 16, 2026

• 🎬 What to Expect:

  • 🎥 Opening Night with To Use a Mountain | The festival kicks off Tuesday evening with Casey Carter’s visceral documentary about six rural communities marked as candidates for nuclear waste burial grounds. The screening includes a catered reception and an in-person conversation with the director.

  • 🥾 Sit Down, Shut Down Audio Hike | A completely unique Wednesday morning hiking and listening experience at the Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge, featuring oral histories about the social and environmental legacy of the former secret nuclear weapons facility.

  • ⏳ Engaged to Wait, Waiting to Engage | A Wednesday afternoon documentary block confronting the exploitations of capitalist culture, featuring stories that range from an incarcerated crew fighting fires for just 70 cents an hour to a mother struggling against domestic expectations.

  • 🌎 Terra | A powerful Thursday afternoon exploration of Colombia’s geographies, peoples, and stories through the material and imperceptible intersections of the land, interweaving geological formations with Indigenous rituals.

  • 🎨 Stop-Motion Animation Workshop | A special Saturday morning masterclass with visiting artist Dana Kavelina at Seidel City, inviting participants behind the scenes to see how miniature worlds create cinematic refuge and how time appears through ruptures in stop-motion animation.

Jack Hanley’s incredible film appreciation masterclass continues its summer run at the Dairy Arts Center. If you have been looking for a way to sharpen your cinematic eye, this nine-session series goes far beyond the standard mechanics of filmmaking to focus on theory, deconstruction, and interpretation.

This week’s session, Part V: The Method and the Madness, focuses entirely on the art of on-screen performance. It is a fantastic educational deep dive for local creators, actors, and film lovers looking to understand how the great cinematic acting techniques translate through the lens, and what separates a theatrical performance from a truly cinematic one.

You do not need to have attended the previous sessions to enjoy this one. Single-session tickets are available directly through the Dairy Arts Center.

Sundance Collab and the outdoor footwear brand Merrell have officially teamed up to launch a massive global storytelling program, awarding $20,000 to five filmmakers around the world to bring their visions to life.

The prompt is simple but incredibly open-ended: create an original, 60 to 90-second vertical film that captures the “simple power of being outside.” They are explicitly not looking for a traditional product commercial. Instead, they want an emotionally resonant human story where stepping outside acts as a catalyst for personal change, connection, or renewal.

If selected, you will attend an online intensive program from September 30 through October 2 to learn the ins and outs of brand collaboration. From there, you will receive the $20,000 budget to take your project into production in October, complete post-production in November, and deliver the final cut by December 14.

As an incredible bonus, all five selected filmmakers will also receive a covered hotel stay to join the Merrell team at the 2027 Sundance Film Festival right here in Boulder next January.

What you will need to apply:

• A written concept or “take” on the brief (up to 500 words)

• A proposed production schedule and budget (up to 500 words)

• A previous work sample as a director

• An optional pitch deck (up to 10 pages)

After a successful run in Boulder, Michael Brody and the team at Roadshow Pictures are expanding their incredible pop-up cinema model, bringing two brand new film and food programs to East Colfax in Denver.

First up on Friday, August 21, Roadshow is unveiling Cinco Cortos. This gripping collection features five Spanish-language short films (fully subtitled in English) that recently made waves on the major festival circuit.

Looking ahead to Saturday, September 19, they are hosting a special encore screening of Slanted. This is an incredibly important film exploring race and the desire to fit in, and it absolutely demands to be seen with a crowd.

Because Roadshow operates as a true pop-up indie theater, they are seeking sponsors to help offset the costs of food and venue rentals. A $300 sponsorship scores you two tickets to the film of your choice, two plates of food, and your name in all their marketing materials.

Denver Film’s seasonal hiring window is entering its decisive period.

With the 49th Denver Film Festival just around the corner in October, it’s now hiring season at Denver Film.

One of the core roles is the Assistant Technical Director, which is a full-time seasonal job. This role is responsible for festival preparation and content management, and they also work as a liaison with filmmakers and distributors.

Denver Film is also hiring a seasonal Production Assistant, which covers equipment delivery, venue setup, event support, strike, storage, schedules, inventories, and general production logistics.

They are hiring for other roles, including:

• Bartender - seasonal front-of-house position serving festival attendees

• Box Office Lead – oversees the box office team and ticketing operations

• Box Officer – part-time seasonal role at $21.50/hour handling ticket, package, and pass sales, voucher redemption, and membership sales, reporting to the Chief Operations Officer

• Concessionaire – manages concessions sales during the festival

• Graphic Designer – supports festival branding and promotional materials

• Lounge Manager – oversees hospitality lounge operations for guests and filmmakers
