Well hi there friend, I hope your long weekend went well if you’re in Canada. Here it was Victoria Day long weekend, officially Queen Victoria’s birthday but unofficially it’s known as “May Two-Four Weekend” — a two-four is a twenty-four pack of beer cans which tells you everything you need to know about how many Canadians “celebrate” the long weekend… 😂 This weekend was also graduation weekend for the Royal Military College of Canada, it’s absolutely bonkers to think that I graduated 15 years ago… 😳
I’ve been doing a lot of new work the past month, including finishing up this incredibly challenging flamingo painting. I’ve titled it Velvet Opulence, and I’ve submitted it to the annual Artists For Conservation Festival exhibition. If it gets in, it’ll be exhibited at the VanDusen Botanical Gardens in September, and then possibly tour around several prestigious galleries in the US for the next year. Fingers crossed, wish me luck!
I also did this small oil painting (8”x8”) on a linen panel of an adorable hare. It was my first time working on that kind of panel, and I liked it. 😊 Both this hare and the flamingo will be available on my site as art prints once they’re dry enough to scan.
And speaking of art prints, I just put five new prints on the site! I made some prints from some of my 100 Days of Inked Birds project I did last year, I classified some birds into their various orders or families. New to the site are these prints:
Aaaaand I can finally annouce the poster for Ocean Week Victoria, I’m the featured artist for our Victoria events (we’re one of the regional hubs for Ocean Week Canada), hooray!
As you can see, this poster is using my painting Tideplay (featuring Steller Sea Lions), and one of my Humpback Whale paintings Soundings is also being featured on greeting cards. I’m also going to be participating in several local Ocean Week events, including at the The Gorge Splashtacular Ocean Festival on May 30 and at the Art with Impact: Live Art for Conservation at The Parkside Hotel & Spa on June 6 in their gorgeous tropical atrium. At both events I’ll be doing a live painting, and at the end of the event they’ll be auctioned off with 50% of the proceeds going to local conservation and education organizations. I’m also going to be heading out with a whale watching company to do some sketching on board and talk to the guests about whale identification. I’m so excited, it’s going to be a veryyyy busy week, but if you’re local I’d love to see you at any of these venues! I’m so proud that less than a year after starting wildlife painting as a means to help local organizations, I’m actually doing it. 😍🥰
