As we gear up for summer here, I dug into my archives to bring you an image that gets me excited about climbing and spending time in the alpine. Last fall, my friend Jesse and I set off for a remote peak on the edge of Banff National Park called Whiteman’s Peak (admittedly an unfortunate name that I hope will be replaced). It was quite possibly the first ascent that this peak has seen in decades.
I kept my eyes on the sunrise; I knew this moment was going to offer prime photographic potential. Jesse is well-accustomed to working with me, and we collaborated on his positioning to optimize my compositions.
In this post-processing video, I walk you through my compositional choices, image selection, each stage of editing, and my reasoning along the way.
“For me, it really conveys what it's like to be out there first thing in the morning. I feel like it's an engaging image because it's dynamic. And it makes me dream of summer. Takes me right back to those experiences, makes me really excited about mountain adventures ahead….
And really, I think the main take-home for this little session is — just because you know how to blend and you've shot a lot of images, always take the time to see if you can get away with just editing one image. It allows you to cut down on your computer time and head back in the field.”
