Do you ever just want to read something creative, different, and completely unpredictable, no matter how strange? I often do, and I did when I read “The Hearing Trumpet.”
A hearing trumpet, for those of you born into the digital age, is a simple hearing aid in the form of a hollowed-out animal horn, or something of that shape, that collects sound and funnels it into your ear. The main character in “The Hearing Trumpet” receives one as a gift from her friend and the first time she uses it, she discovers that her family is going to send her to a home for old ladies.
The home is not what one would expect. The women live in bungalows with fairy-tale shapes. The proprietors have motives other than the welfare of the residents. The residents and the grounds have secrets. A magical world emerges. The Earth changes. Life goes on and we are left wondering if we should go hug our grandmother and make her a cup of tea.
“The Hearing Trumpet” is a fantastic book delving into mystery, madness, legend, and hallucination (maybe). If you love literature and want something fun, easy to read, creative, and unpredictable, you’ll love this book.
