Book Review

It’s not often I add modern books to the “Novels I Love” list on my bookshop.org page, but “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” just got added. What a wonderful book. It’s told in first person from the perspective of a special-needs boy in England, perhaps autistic, or a savant, I’m not sure, but it makes for great reading. It’s extremely creative and immersive and it brings the reader into a mind we have never experienced, and makes us see the world from a completely new perspective. I loved it. Five stars.

Isaac Asimov’s “The End of Eternity” also made the list. The book centers on time travel and how it has affected society and the development of mankind in the future, spanning thousands of centuries. The plot keeps getting deeper and more interesting. Asimov was truly a master. He wrote around 470 books, was a pioneer of science fiction, and this is one of his best.

And finally, a classic from Thomas Hardy made the list, “Jude the Obscure.” The novel brings to light some questions about marriage that were not appreciated in 1896, but that still ring true today. In fact, there was so much public outcry over this novel and Tess of D’Urbervilles that Thomas Hardy decided to step away from writing novels and focus on poetry. Jude the Obscure is a classic and well worth your time if you like great literature.
