Although it begins with Tommy-guns and Trümmerkinder, my latest publishing venture has nothing directly to do with Chasing Mercury. It’s a slim novella set on, in and around the Thames, upriver of London, in the long, hot summer of 1976.
It’s not an easy book to describe. When I first started thinking about it, a long time ago, one of my not-entirely-unserious elevator pitches to myself was ‘Marcel Proust meets Stranger Things’ (I even mentioned it in my blog back in the day, here).
But this blog says it better:
“A sophisticated, bittersweet coming-of-age story with elements of metafiction and magical realism… funny, erudite, and beautifully crafted.” NOIR ON THE VINE
That quote comes from a thought-provoking blog post which is a ringing endorsement not only of this novella, 76, but also of my short story collection, ANIMUS, and of the Chasing Mercury series. I’m honoured and delighted to have been used as an example in this meditation on the increasing value of ‘indie’ publishing in today’s world.
Anyway, the NOIR blog is definitely worth a look – and if you think you might be interested in a sort-of ‘supernatural memoir’ which is also, in part, my origin story, then so is 76.
It’s due to be released this summer for the 50th anniversary. And it’s available for pre-order in kindle edition now at a ridiculously reasonable price!
