Pauline Tait, Author & Mentor · Pauline Tait Award-Winning Author & Writing Mentor

The Writers & Publishers Network approached me earlier this year to ask if I would write three articles for their upcoming publications. Article two is on the mentoring side of my author business…

Children’s picture books might appear small, but they can have a meaningful and lasting impact. A single sentence can spark a love of reading, while a single illustration can stay with a child for years. For that to happen, a book must be more than just a good idea. It needs to be written, illustrated, and published to a standard that will make it stand out. Whether you’re aiming for a traditional publishing deal or pursuing a career in self-publishing, your book must meet the same high standards as those produced by traditional publishers.

That is where I come in. I am a writing and publishing mentor for children’s authors, and my role is to help authors create the very best version of their book, from the first idea to the moment they hold it in their hands. I make sure it is not only polished and engaging, but also meets the standards needed for major retailers, bookshops, libraries, schools, and literacy programs.

What I Do

Working with me is about more than sending a manuscript and receiving feedback. I work alongside authors, guiding them through the different stages of their writing and publishing journey.

We focus on:

  • The technical specifications of picture books

  • Understanding your target audience

  • Developing memorable characters and plots children will love

  • Understanding pace, tone, and writing through illustration

  • Choosing age-appropriate, engaging vocabulary with a natural read-aloud flow

  • Preparing manuscripts for publication or submission, and exploring publishing options

  • Finding and working with an illustrator

  • Fonts and blurbs

  • Nailing the all-important front and rear covers and ensuring they meet traditional standards

  • Working to publication and beyond

My aim is to help authors produce work that meets the standards of traditional publishing, while keeping their unique voice.

How It Helps You

Children’s publishing is competitive, and success requires more than talent alone. I help authors not only develop their writing but also present their work to professional standards.

Sometimes that means polishing vocabulary, so it keeps a child’s attention to the last page. Sometimes it means helping you work with an illustrator and ensure your final interior layout is both to publishing standards and engaging.

I also help with the practical side of publishing, including choosing the right trim size, paper, and cover design to appeal to your audience.

The result is a book you can be proud of, one that will appeal to retailers and lead to school visits, events, and new opportunities.

Why Authors Choose Me

Many authors come to me feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure of how to navigate the publishing process alone. They want guidance from someone who understands both the creative and practical sides of children’s books and the wider publishing world, and who is honest, supportive, and encouraging.

As a multi-award-winning picture book author, I have firsthand experience of what it takes to create a stand-out book. Having gone through the process myself, I know the common pitfalls and can help authors avoid them.

I work alongside authors at every stage, championing their ideas and helping them bring their best book to life. Many of the authors I’ve mentored have gone on to win awards, and have launched their books in Waterstones and other major retailers.

My goal is to give authors the confidence, guidance, and practical support they need to create a book that stands out, reaches readers, and makes an impact in the world of children’s publishing.
