While coworking from a coffee shop this week I was surprised to see a WiFi SSID being broadcasted on a 6GHz band.
Curious side note: why is the 6 separate from the 2.4/5 if they all share the same name?
What?! Six gigahertz?! I thought that I was fancy with my dual-band 2.4 and 5GHz access point, but nope, 802.11ax (WiFi 6) has been around since ~2020. Such is the long tail cycle: a standard lands, products are built to support it, and then consumers actually need to buy it.
There’s even a WiFi 7 and 8 that are expected to land later this year in 2024 and in 2028, respectively.
I love hearing from readers so please feel free to reach out.
